Skype problems

I hope someone can help. When I try to talk to my daughter in the uk using skype, the sound is terrible. It's like interference and I can hardly hear her. We recently brought her a new web cam so we thought that would be ok. She also freezes and the connection drops sometimes.

I am getting really frustrated with it as this is our main way to communicate with each other as she has just moved into a new flat with her boyfriend.

Please please, does someone have any ideas?

Oh so many things, you're best bet is to try and be methodical. It's sounds to me as thoguh you had it working ok and now lots of elements have changed and it's not working so well.

This new web cam, firstly can she try her old one? Does this new one have one of those integrated mics? What are you both using for sound and speech? Separate mics? Speakers?

What is your broadband service like? And hers? What time of day are you using skype? Has this changed?
Are either of you downloading/uploading at the same time as speaking?

Thanks for replying, I must apologise because I had actually forgotten that I had posted it, sorry.

Well, we think we have narrowed it down to either her crappy internet or her laptop. Because she has just moved into her flat she has just brought a dongle internet thingy which was cheaper because of her mobile contract. The laptop is our old one which she took back to the UK with her.

She tried the web cam on my sister new laptop and there wasn't any difference. She took the laptop to her nans and tried it there, still no difference (I wondered if it might be some sort of intereference because she lives in a flat).

Unfortunately, paying for a new laptop for her isn't an option right now as until I start work, money is tight. It look like she will have to visit her nans so that I can talk to her.

No idea why, but talking to my mum and dad works best on Windows Live Messenger, talking to Sam's mum works best on Skype. So maybe try the other one.

Also, we seem to get a clearer signal when they start the call rather than us.

I find this too we use both skype and windows live messenger(msn) and sometimes one is ok and the other has an awful connection other times its the other one we chop and change to see which is best and dont forget you can always type to each other

Thanks for your help, I think it is just a case of trial and error and lots of frustration, lol!

make sure you are both using the most up to date version of Skype - that can make a difference...

Most Skype probs are based on internet speed - if you do not have a good download AND upload speed, it can be poor, so mobile wireless broadband can cause problems...

Also make sure neither of you have not been "throttled" by your ISP for going over your allotted monthly download allowance...

Finally, try to meet at less popular times. The less Skype users online, the better the connection tends to be.

Hope you get it sorted, as it is a great way to keep in touch...
