    Jobs

Ok I have now officially had my fill with trying to get a job here and Im starting to hate the place!!

Moved here at the beginning of the year on a permanent residency visa and not been able to find work yet. I am a business manager/director and have done that successfully for 10 years and also been a qualified accountant for the last 13 years. We are currently in Brisbane.

I have now applied for about 250 jobs. I have had 2 interviews in this time and one went to someone with criteria not specified in the job specs and the other went to someones mate!

So Ive changed tact and started applying in Sydney and Melbourne. But nothing has changed. I applied for a further 70 jobs this weekend and by 10am this morning I had 10 rejections. I have asked for feedback and 2 have replied...both saying that they are only looking for local people with local experience (i.e Aussies) One of the agencies I tried to register with told me that I didnt have the required skills they were after and they had NOTHING on their books and that there was no point registering. I have tried pretty much everything. Apparently Im under qualified to be a graduate accountant and I dont have the required hamper packing experience to pack christmas hampers.

Its not that there arent any jobs. There are plenty. But I dont even get a look in, not even a call to discuss anything. Just an immediate rejection.

I have had my resume reviewed and my covering letters and the feedback Ive had is that they are both excellent. So I guess its just me.

My wife is obviously distraught. We moved here on a skilled visa because we were told that my skills were in great demand and that australia "wanted me". She wants to go home but I do not want to go back to England as a failure. I dont want to go back to England at all but if I am totally unemployable then what can I do???

All I can say is our dream has totally been ruined.

We have no-one to turn to here and no-one to talk to really so many apologies for this whinge.

Can anyone offer me any kind of hope????

    Re: Jobs

It's a lot more about 'networking' and contacts than it is about sending CVs to agencies here. Hence, probably, the reason that agencies don't want to know unless you are actually there. Aussie experience is everything, especially when jobs are scarce anyway.

Sounds like you are looking at ANY job that is vaguely suitable ... even a short-term contract could set you up for extensions.

Good luck with it, once you get your foot in the door it will be a lot easier to move on to something more suitable to your skills.

Just to echo the above posts. Sorry you are having such a tough time.

There are people on here who have had similar experiences and who almost gave up and then they just had one bit of luck and turned around. I hope this happens for you very soon. :fingers crossed:

BTW you are not a failure.

    Re: Jobs

I have to be honest and say apply direct (don't stop contacting agencies but I think they are worse then useless! I am sorry if anyone works in one but both in the UK and Australia they have been terrible for me) I am sure you have been but use the job search engines (like Monster but I heard they no longer exist) such as SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site and also try looking at the governement website, local state and federal as well as police force, AFP, Courts etc. they have roles for various backgrounds.

    Re: Jobs

Don't worry M8, I know how it feels. I can't get a job at the moment and Woolworth’s even rejected me as they had a better qualified person to fill shelves after hours. Still, look on the bright side: You still got your family and your health. It’s hard, feeling you’re a failure, perhaps just been lucky before. No longer being able to give your family the support they need. Growing kids need new clothes. The cost of food. All the bills that roll in each month. All I can say is we're hanging in there. We could go home, but then we have to go through all the crap and costs we went through setting up here again. The booms over so there’s no guarantee that I’ll find a job, or in the area that I want to live. I think things will improve here before they do back in the UK so we just keep trying. I must say that there are people on this site that have been exceptionally kind, have given us great support and have even tried to help us find work. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. They know who they are. So please don’t think your on your own, because your not. I’m sure if any one here can help you they will.

    Re: Jobs

Office based work is really hard to come by. It has taken me 3 years to finally get a permanent full time job! Although I didn't have the pressure of being the main income earner, so I'd hate to think how you are feeling.

All I can say is keep ploughing through, take anything you can get even if it's only temping work for a few weeks at a time and it's a lower position than you would like. That's what I have been doing for the past year, and it finally paid off last month when one of the company's I'd worked for in the past gave me a chance.

Take a look at their site and see if there's anything for you. It's Thiess - they use Oracle as an accounts package, if you have any knowledge of that it will give you an advantage...it worked for me
